The other day we ran into a man at Sam's that was missing his thumb. He saw my four year old sucking his thumb and walked up to him saying "You know, I used to suck my thumb so hard it came off."
My husband and I were a little taken back by this. We weren't sure if that would freak Ethan out completely, gross him out or if he wouldn't get it at all. We had to grin though, hoping maybe, just maybe, that would be a turning point for Ethan and scare the thumb-sucking right out of him.
He stopped for a moment, thought about it, and then put his thumb back in. We asked him if he understood what the man said he replied he did. So we asked if why he wasn't afraid of losing his thumb. He told us "that man didn't really lose his thumb, he was just teasing." We tried explaining that it was for real it was really gone but he wasn't buying it. We frantically looked around hoping to call the man back over and prove it was really gone but he was no where in sight. Bummer. For a brief moment, we thought this was the perfect answer and that it would solve all our thumb-sucking problems once and for all. So close..and yet so far away.
So if any of you are missing a thumb, let me know. I could really use your hand in a life lesson for my son - even if you didn't lose it in a thumb-sucking frenzy, we can still say you did :)
