Sunday Citar-New Beginnings

From the end springs new beginnings - Pliny the Elder

Saturday graced us with a very unusual warm spell that seemed to only last a few hours. The wind was brisk, but the sun made it bearable. Ethan was playing with new Christmas toys when I yelled across the room to go grab his boots and coat we were going outside. When he asked why, I said "because it's 47 degrees outside on January 1st and we're going outside!"

We threw our things on, grabbed a sippy cup of milk for Lucas and headed out. In a matter of just an hour or so we managed to play soccor, football, kickball, catch, Ethan rode his new scooter and I took a million pictures like we had never seen the sun before. It was so wonderful to get some fresh air. We oh so needed it.

I realize my quote isn't necessarily referring to Spring the season, but I couldn't help but feel it was appropriate since Saturday was "spring-like" and being January 1st, the beginning of a new year..well, it just fit.

I'm looking forward to this new year for a million reasons I'll post about later. But in the meantime, here's a few snapshots of our wintery "spring".

Wordless Wednesday-Let's Go Sledding!!

Yep, that's my first born going down his first REAL sledding hill on his new "snowmobile" sled. He couldn't have been more excited. And I think it scared me a little just how NOT nervous he was.

It was freezing cold but he held tough. It wasn't until we pulled into the driveway when he said, "Dad, now my feet are starting to feel a little cold.." Um, I think reality just set in, my son. Cause my feet were numb a LONG time ago!

Whoa..What Just Happened?!? Christmas!!

Ahhh.. Christmas. Christmas with two kids. Two VERY active kids, I might add. This year was all I had hoped it would be and then some. It was crazy, hectic, and a little more crazy. But my kids rocked it. I mean tore through those gifts like nobody's business rocked it. Like I had to have a sit-down with my four-year old about how some kids don't get anything for Christmas and he shouldn't say things like "that's all?" and "that's for girls.." or "what else did you get me?" kind of rocked it. Oh, the joys of a preschool child who knows nothing but honesty!

Wordless Wednesday-What Matters Most

Just remember, while they may not like everything you Santa got them...

And chances are they'll play more with the simple things..like the box or wrapping paper..or the water bottle from the night before

And they might even make fun of you for not getting as much as them..

The important thing was that you were with the ones you love, and that's what matters most.

Have a Merry CHRISTmas!!!

Wordless Wednesday-Ho Ho Ho!

Ho Ho Ho..ly moly Christmas is next week. Am I finished with my shopping? Almost. Am I ready to stay up all night wrapping presents? Not quite. Am I ready to celebrate the greatest holiday with my newly expanded family? Absolutely!

I know that Christmas Eve and Christmas morning will prove to be chaotic with a 10-month old who just learned to walk and eats any paper he comes in contact with and a four year old who seems to have lost any sense of patience whatsoever. There will be wrapping paper everywhere, boxes half open as we realized there's 300 zip-ties to be removed before we can get the toy out. Empty coffee cups from our late night wrapping frenzy will be mingled in with our fresh brew of the morning. And there will be joy. The squeals, the excitement, the amazement of the children that Santa fit down our chimney..I love it. I love it, love it, love it. I don't know about them, but I won't sleep hardly a wink Christmas Eve. Crap, this is Wordless Wednesday isn't it? Oops.  Well, it's one of my shorter posts so that still counts, right?

When He Grows Up.. He Wants to Be...

I love the conversations I have with my four year-old son. LOVE them. He loves to talk like his mama, he's smart and his imagination is amazing. Today when we sat down for lunch, I thought I would throw out there the "what do you want to be when you grow up" question as it changes everytime I ask him. Here's how today's conversation went -

Me: Ethan, what do you think you want to be when you grow up?
Ethan: Nothing.
Me: Nothing? No, what kind of job do you want to have?
Ethan: I don't want a job. I don't like jobs.
Me: (hmm.. this isn't going like I thought) Why don't you like jobs?
Ethan: Because I don't.
Me: (I decide to try another approach) Would you like to be a fireman?
Ethan: No.
Me: Why not?
Ethan: Cause I might get burned.
Me: Ok..how about a policeman?
Ethan: Nope.
Me: Why not?
Ethan: Because I might get hit by a car when I'm writing up a ticket.
Me: Oh. What about a doctor?
Ethan. No. (I love how he's keeping it short and sweet..)
Me: Why not a doctor?
Ethan: They have to give shots and kids hate you.
Me: Well, if you don't get a job, how will you buy a house or food to eat?
Ethan: I'm going to live here forever. Because I love you guys soooo much (I swear I hear sarcasm..) And I'll just eat your food.
Me: Don't you want to have your own house?
Ethan: Oh fine, mom. I'll just be a zero repairman.
Me: What the heck is a zero repairman?
Ethan: It's a guy that repairs zero's.
Me: Oh. That's it?
Ethan: And ride snowmobiles. I wanna do tricks n' stuff - like front flips and things like that. Can we eat now?
Me: Yeah, buddy, we can eat.

I'm not sure what I was hoping his answer would be, but I can tell you a snowmobiler who risks his life everyday for people drinking Mt. Dew wasn't it.

Oh my little daredevil..he's so cute but I have a feeling he's gonna cause his mama

Business is Booming

A few months ago I wrote a post about my new job as an Independent Consultant for Tastefully Simple here.

Right after I signed up, a new incentive challenge was announced. We had to set a goal for ourselves to see what we could reach for 2/3 of the fourth quarter. The largest amount of sales it would let me choose was $500 in sales because I was new.

Yesterday, I got an email that said this:

Folks, I achieved this goal with 3 parties, 1 Woman's Expo (that was a flop!) and random orders from family, friends, and complete strangers calling me saying they've been looking for a consultant.

I believe in Tastefully Simple and I believe in their products. The products truly sell themselves and keeps people coming back for more. All but ONE of my random orders were people reordering products they had ran out of. Because it is THAT GOOD.

For those of you thinking that our prices are bit high - I hear ya. I totally understand how you might think that. But, let me put it into perspective for you. You are paying for high-quality food and convenience. All of our products require two ingredients or less to prepare. If you were to go to Applebee's (medium-priced restaurant) and order a bowl of soup you would pay anywhere from $5-7 for one person. Right? Our soups range from $7.49-$8.49 and will make up to 6 cups. That's enough to feed your whole family! And you don't have to leave the house!

You want to get in on the fun and party for a living? Do you just want to try something to see what all the fuss is about? Or would you like to host a party to earn your products for FREE? Go to my Tastefully Simple website below to order online, request a party or learn more about the business opportunity.

Wordless Wednesday - Soak It Up

It's Christmas. Soak it up.

We're about to embark on another new year and I can't believe how fast they are flying by. When years start to feel like moments, you know you are blessed.

Seems like only yesterday I was this small and dreaming about having a family of my own some day to create our own Christmas traditions.... I can not tell you how excited I am to have our first Christmas with "kids" as in plural. My family is now complete and it's the greatest feeling EVER.

10 Months!!

Lucas, it's been a busy month for you. It seems like yesterday I wrote your 9 month post, but this week marked another month gone by. Your blond hair continues to grow in thick, making you look more like a little boy every day and with those blue eyes of yours, cute as ever. A constant reminder of how quickly time flies.
This month you have worked hard on increasing your vocabulary. Other people besides us can now recognize "Ethan" when you say it. There is no longer confusion between "mama" and "nanananana". You know what my name is, and you use it - a lot. You can now say "daddy".

Last week we had our first "fun" bathtime. Instead of just squealing, flipping around like crazy, and crawling from one end of the tub to the other and soaking me, you sat. And you played. Hard. You played basketball. You put toys into buckets. You poured water out of buckets. And you had a blast standing up and throwing things out of the tub just to watch me put them back. You loved every minute of it, and so did I.

You have been very busy finding new ways to play with your toys. More than anything, though, you love playing with your brother's toys. You want to do everything Ethan does and you don't hesitate to try.

You have been standing for a few weeks now and randomly taking a small step here or there. But this week, you decided it was time. It was time to let go and make it happen. We were all so proud!! You also learned how to clap for the first time the same day which we happened to catch in this video too. I can't believe how much you've learned this month!

You are so curious about everything and how it works, I love watching the wheels in your mind at work.

The past week you have been under the weather and sleeping has been almost non-existent. It's made for some very long days, but you've handled them well. While you can be quite the stinker at nighttime still, you are the happiest day-time baby anyone could find. Sick or not, you make the best of it. For that, we are all grateful.

You now hold your own bottle for all of the 4 minutes it takes you to consume it. You've also figured out that solids can fill your tummy too and you've come to prefer them to that whole baba thing anyways. I swear there are days there is no bottom to your little belly. Your appetite mimics your brother's. I can only imagine what our grocery bill is going to be when you're teenagers!

The first time you saw snow you were only a few days old and I'm pretty sure you don't remember coming home from the hospital. So far this year I think you are partially confused why it's falling from the sky and you're not really thrilled with being frozen to see it. I'm not really thrilled about having to bundle you up to go out in it everyday, but you sure are cute all puffed up in your winter coat.

This month has been eventful and memorable for you and I absolutely love it. I am amazed by your similarities and your differences from your brother. You play so well together and the bond between you gives me goose bumps. We love you to pieces and are so very glad you are here. You complete our family.
If Daddy wasn't taking the picture, he woulda been in it too :)

Wordless Wednesday-Please Tell Him..

Someone please tell Lucas he's still a baby. Please. I'm convinced he's decided that whole baby-cuddly stage isn't for him. He's not quite 10 months old and he's already driving around Ethan's remote control cars. He wants nothing to do with "chew" toys and everything to do with Hot Wheels and Batman. I was seriously thinking the baby stage was going to last a wee bit longer than this. Geesh.

Indoor Camping

This summer we took our first "real" camping trip with the boys. Although some may argue that sleeping in a 5th wheel isn't exactly camping it, having intermittent power, a billion mosquitoes, rain everyday and a sick 5 month old says it was. You can read more about that crazy trip here.

Despite our rough initiation to camping, we rather enjoyed it. The close quarters. The extra cuddling. The lack of technology (ok, I really had a hard time with no internet...but I survived). It was so much fun my oldest keeps asking when we can go again. Obviously, camping when it's 30 degrees out isn't something I'm ready to sign up for anytime soon. Well, not outdoors anyways.

So we decided to have a mini-camping trip right in the living room. We actually did this a few weeks ago, but sadly I'm just getting around to the post.

We started by rolling out the air mattresses.

Then, we made s'mores on the s'mores maker - in the dining room.

All the excitement and a little sugar brought on the happy dance??

Then we made some popcorn. Yes, I burned it, but nonetheless, it was popcorn.

We put on our PJ's and stayed up late and watched movies. (Cause doesn't everyone watch movies camping??)
This very cheese family portrait was taken on my phone. Not my best angle, lol.
Overall, our first indoor camping trip was a success. A slight inconvenience and loss of the comfort of our "real" bed meant the world to my four year old who couldn't stop talking about it all week while he waited for that Friday to come.

These are the memories, folks, that they will remember. What they got for Christmas when they were 3 maybe not so much. But, what you did as a family together for total, random fun, absolutely and forever.

First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage.. (Part 1)

This post has been burning on my heart for weeks. I've hesitated writing it because I wasn't sure where it was going to take me, if I'd be brave enough to actually publish it, or if it would come across as helpful or me just rambling. And I'm certain someone will disagree with me. But, I can't get it off my mind so I'm going to just do it. I am actually going to post it in a few parts sort of like a mini-series.

Let this be considered Part 1 of my "First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage.." Series.

"First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage, Then Comes Baby in the Baby Carriage"...yeah, and then what?!? Do you remember that song? We used to sing it on the playground when we were teasing two kids who "liked" each other or wanted to "go" with each other. It was almost as if we were trying to say being in love was a bad thing. You made fun of those kids, even though secretly you were wishing it was you that was holding hands with that special someone.

Years later, you find that special someone. You fall in love. You get married. You have kids (for some its pets) and then all hell breaks loose. And you wonder, where was that in the song? No one told me it was going to be hard, tedious work, this whole marriage thing. No one told me that after the baby carriage you're going to be too exhausted to give two hoots about much else. And you start to wonder if the next line should be "Divorce," and sadly for many, it is.

How many of you have ever caught yourself saying any one of these phrases about your husband:
  • I just wish he would do a little more.
  • I wish he still did this like he used to.
  • He used to do this for me, but not anymore.
  • What does he think I do all day?
  • Would it kill him to say thank-you every once in awhile?
  • Yes, he helps with that, but I wish he would do more of this instead.
  • Doesn't he understand maybe I would like to do that?
  • Does he realize how tired I am?
  • I wish he would notice me like he used to.
  • He doesn't even try anymore.
  • God, he annoys me sometimes.
  • Why doesn't he comfort me like he used to?
  • Does he realize how much I have to get done still?
If you're married, you've probably thought one of these at least once. And unless you're a newlywed, probably a whole lot more than that. Am I saying it's different for newlyweds? Yes, I am.

I've been married for 8 years. We dated for 4 years before that. That's 12 years with the same guy. In 12 years, you start to get to know someone really well, and yet, there is always something new to learn. And because people change, what you knew 12 years ago might not hold true today. A relationship is something that you constantly have to work on. Key word, "work".

When you first make a friend, you talk for hours right? That's how you connect. You talk about everything under the sun and you can't wait to do things with them, to spend more time with them. It's the same when you fall in love. You get that butterfly feeling because not only have you made a new friend, but you're attracted to this person and it's new and exciting because you don't know what to expect from one moment to the next. And that's exactly why it goes away. Because after you've been married for awhile, you know exactly what to expect. The.same.thing.everyday. You get up at the same time everyday, you do the same job everyday, you wear the same clothes you've had for years and you make one of the same meals you've been making for years and you go to bed at the same time. How exciting is that? It's not.

Without the unexpected surprises and the effort that people put into a new relationship, the falling in love "feelings" disappear. Does this mean you don't love them anymore? Absolutely not. Does this mean that the marriage is doomed for failure and you should leave? NO. It just means you're going to need to step up and put some effort forth - like.you.used.to. That's right, YOU.

Do you ever wonder why over 50% of marriages end in divorce? I mean really stop and think about it. I bet you're answer was that there are multiple reasons - unfaithfulness, abuse, disagreements, etc.. And you would be partially right. Sure, there are various reasons people divorce, but the basis for all their reasons is exactly the same, they became unhappy or unsatisfied. Right? But how many of them were unhappy the day they got married? Not many. Did they get married because they weren't "in love"? Not likely.
So why do people become unhappy in their marriages? That's easy. They stopped focusing on their spouses' needs and started focusing on their own. Instead of saying "What can I do to make my husband happy today" your thoughts were more "Why doesn't he try to make me happy anymore?" And that, my friends, is an evil door that we need to learn to slam shut and lock, for good.

Tell me, when you are going through your list of complaints, do you ever stop and look at how they feel? How have you changed? What little things did you use to do for him that you don't do anymore? Are you not doing those things because you don't think he'd like them anymore, or because you're resentful? Come on, be honest. Did you stop telling him he looked good before work because he doesn't or because he stopped saying it to you? Did you stop writing him love notes for his lunch because he stopped saying thank-you for them, or he forgot to read a few? When is the last time you sat and actually watched sports with him..or do you sit next to him reading blogs on the laptop or do chores instead? Remember when you used to cuddle just to cuddle? Yeah, I bet he's got a few phrases he says about us too.

So, today, I want you to write a list. Not a list of what it is you wish he would do, but a list of what you stopped doing for him. Think back to those first few months of dating. Then, I want you to add to your list when you think the last time you did that for him was. Was it a month ago? A year ago? Can't remember? Finally, I want you to make a point to do one of those things this week. And come back ready to talk about what his reaction was.

Look for Part 2 of this series to be posted early next week.

I'd love to hear your comments and or feedback.

Mind Sweep - 11/29/10

Photobucket

Good morning!! It's time for our Monday Mind Sweep. Not sure what the sweep is all about? It's easy! Write a post listing the first 20 things that come to your mind. No specific format, no rules, just get it out on "paper" to clear your mind and get you ready for the week. I'd love it if you'd add my button to your post, but it's not required. Join us by linking up your post below! Let's get started..

1. Lucas didn't sleep hardly a wink last night and finally crashed in our bed at 5:30am..when I usually get up. So I laid there checking emails until I apparently dosed off..and woke up at 8!

2. Sleeping in would be awesome if it was the weekend, but it isn't..and I had to leave by 8:30 to get my oldest to preschool. Can you say holy..

3. This weekend went by super fast like all holiday weekends do, but overall it was a good one. Cheesy potatoes, mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes..how can you go wrong?

4. I went to Toys R Us at 10pm on Wednesday, Wal-mart at midnight only to get home at 2am and decide to just stay up since I was going back up to Sears at 3am. Yes, I'm retarded and no, it wasn't worth it. And yes, I'll probably do it again next year.

5. I discovered that I can still function on 0 sleep but it's MUCH harder with two kids in your face the next day. I would NOT recommend it!

6. My husband actually suggested I buy a pair of those legging pants that everyone's wearing. I told him that fat people like me might wear them, but they shouldn't and therefore I wasn't buying them. But I thought it was super sweet that he wasn't disgusted about the though of me going out in public with them on, lol.

7. My first contest is almost over. I can't believe how much traffic it's brought me. WAY excited! If you didn't get a chance to enter, click here. Contest ends November 30th. $35 CSN Stores gift certificate up for grabs!

8. Had an awesome Tastefully Simple party on Tuesday. Sold $566 so far and she has additional outside orders. Can I get a woot woot!?! If you're interested in knowing how you could make some extra money partying and eating food..click here!

9. I'm pretty sure I gained 5 lbs from all those yummy potatoes I mentioned in #3. I really need to start this diet again soon. I'm thinking the Peppermint Oreos my husband found for me yesterday are going to delay those diet plans for at least..a day.

10. I really need a week without kids. Everytime someone babysits, the idea is that we leave the house to "get out for a bit". I really need them to "get out for a bit" so I can get something done around the house. And it's gonna take me more than an hour...

11. I realized I used a godzillion "....."'s in my posts and I'm really not sure when that bad habit started. Is that similar to typing "like" in blogging? Are they really giving the dramatic pause I'm looking for or do you just think I have some sort of obsession with periods?? Hmm..

12. I'm having a heck of time with our Christmas lights this year. We cut down some trees and so we have to do our whole side of the house or it will look weird. But we don't have enough lights. I don't want to buy more to match cause I don't like the ones we have. But I refuse to pay full price for lights knowing they will be clearanced after the holidays. The hubby refuses to put them around just the windows and garage door. By the time I decide it's not even gonna be worth hanging them up, I bet.

13. Ethan is soooo excited about Christmas this year. Pretty sure he's circled everything in the Big Toy Book except the Barbies. When we tell him he can't have something (like a new Polaris Razor Powerwheel) because he already has a powerwheel, he quickly responds "That's ok. I'm going to sell the one I have because it's old now and I want a new one." He sounds a lot like his daddy..

14.  I wonder when we are going to do our annual neighborhood Christmas Caroling.. I need to call Carrie to find out.

15. Our church announced yesterday they are going to coordinate a time for us to help in a soup kitchen to serve food to those that need it. I can not tell you how excited I am. I have always wanted to do this, but never had the nerve to go by myself. I can not wait to serve others. I have been the family that has received food for the holidays before and I think people don't realize how exciting that is for the kids and how good it makes the parents feel they can supply a good meal for their kids. You don't understand until you've been there. Trust me.

16. Is 9:30 too early to eat lunch? All this talk about potatoes has me craving some leftovers.

17. I really hope Lucas naps today. I have soooo much to get done (as usual). I really try hard to focus on just the boys when they are up because I feel that's the reason I get to stay home, but I think sometimes I should be doing more while they play alone. I think they are getting a little too used to having my complete attention.

18. It looks so beautiful outside today. If only it were as warm as it looks.

19. We are going to get out all our Christmas decorations tonight and I'm totally geeked about it.

20. I can't wait to see Lucas' eyes when he sees that tree all lit up...I'll prolly lose the 5 lbs I gained from Thanksgiving potatoes just by chasing him away from the tree all day.

Ok, your turn - link up your mind sweep!

Sunday Citar-Pulling at my Pants

It's time for Sunday Citar with Fresh Mommy:

If you haven't time to respond to a tug at your pants leg, your schedule is too crowded.  ~Robert Brault,

There have been times when all of us have snapped at our child while they were pulling our pant leg because we just wanted to finish one.freaking.thing. There are times we get caught yelling at our kids "what?!?" when they've called our name 100 times trying to get our attention and we were too busy to look up. We've all been there, because none of us are perfect. I know I'm not. And with the crazy hecticness of life, sometimes our priorities get askew.

So let this be today's reality check for you. Being a parent is the greatest blessing we could ever have. Period. So, the next time your child is saying "mom.mom.mom.mooooom." and pulling your pant leg, stop what you're doing, look them straight in the eye and say "yes, honey?" Because at the end of the day, whatever you're working on won't matter, but they will. Just sayin'

Nothing But Grace

Every week I read Mama Kat's Writing Prompts and every once in awhile a prompt stands out to me. This week she had several Thanksgiving-themed topics and then one off-the-wall one: Describe a time you fell down. Now, I realize this might seem like a boring topic to most people. You might even struggle to think of the last time you fell down. Not I. No, my mind instantly went down memory lane as if it was in a bobsled going 100 miles an hour trying to decide WHICH time I fell down I should write about. Maybe the time I fell up the stairs? Nah. Maybe that time I slipped and fell underneath the truck? Nah...And then I remembered THAT time.

It was almost 8 years ago this winter. We were living in our first home, in what I'll call a so-so neighborhood. (It wasn't until after we moved out I realized half of the registered sex offenders of the city lived within a 5 mile radius of me..). My husband rode snowmobiles and he was on one of his trips. I had decided to go to church that Sunday myself. It had snowed the night before, but nothing too out of the ordinary.

I felt like dressing up, so I decided to go with a skirt on this cold, wintery day. I put on my long dress coat, grabbed my bible and purse and stepped outside. I remember being excited the car wasn't covered in that much snow so I wouldn't have to brush it off. Little did I know that's because it was covered in ICE instead.

I came down off our front porch and walked across the lawn, noticing a slight "crunch" to the grass. I concluded it must be colder than I thought and it was just frozen.

Now, before I continue, you have to envision our driveway. We had a one car garage, but it was small and it was filled with everything that didn't fit into our small house. The driveway wasn't quite a 45 degree angle but it could easily be used as a sledding hill - you know, if you didn't mind hitting the garage at the bottom. Here's a picture to give you an idea. (Can you see the slope of the driveway?)

You now understand why the fact the driveway was a sheet of ice was not good for my situation. By not good, I mean the high heels I chose to wear with my skirt didn't fair well on the ice. And when I say they didn't fair well, I mean I went flying into the air and then promptly slid down to the bottom of the driveway. Pretty sure the neighbors saw the color of my underwear that day since my skirt and coat were both closer to my head then my "tail". The Bible had went flying, my purse was scattered throughout the snow and I was now soaking wet from the ice and had scrapes on my arms and legs. Nice, I thought.

I decided I would get up and try to pretend it didn't happen praying no one saw me. Only one small problem. When I tried to stand up, I slipped again. And again. And...again. Yes I'm serious! So, I thought I'd take my shoes off (don't ask me why I thought nylons would be less slippery than my shoes...). I guess I figured I was gonna be some sort of monkey and grab onto the ice with my toes?? But, that didn't work either (duh). I slipped again. Keep in mind, when I say I slipped I mean I fell on my face... hard. I finally resorted to crawling. But I wasn't having much luck with that since I was now laughing my butt off at just how ridiculously drunk I must look to the neighbors and if they only knew I was trying to go to church! I remember thinking how I couldn't wait to tell my husband, he was never gonna believe this story.

I got creative and grabbed onto ice chunks as if they were the saving rocks on the side of a mountain and got close enough to the edge of the driveway to get a knee on the grass. I then stuck my toes into the ground and dug them in with all my strength to pull my other leg over and get my entire body out of the driveway. I can only imagine how graceful this must have looked.

I stood up, picked up my Bible and went back into the house. I decided to stay home that day. I figured the car wasn't going to drive up that stupid hill anyways. My clothes were soaked. I had cuts on my knees as if I was 5, and now I was exhausted.

And the funniest part about this story? Is that this stuff happens to me all.the.time. I'm a clutz. Can any of you relate? Share your story! If you want to join Mama Kat's Writing Prompt, click here.
